Happy Leap Day… Belated

Dog House Plans I know, I know, Leap day has come and gone, but I can explain. I actually took this photo on Thursday February 28th just to be ready to post it on Leap day, the 29th. However, my computer had other plans. I was on my computer around 11:45pm the night before Leap day and thought about posting it at midnight, but reconsidered because the photo was taken during the daytime and I wanted it to seem like it was taken on Leap Day. So, I decided to type up all my tags and description and get everything ready to just hit upload in the morning. The next morning, much to my surprise, my computer was frozen! Then it wouldn’t restart! I, now, finally have it fixed and have recovered all my data, but my photo had to be posted two weeks late.

I have a dog house that was built many years ago, andis up on a deck of it’s own made out of pressure treated wood. Trex would work very well, too, for the deck.

All wood will eventually rot, as that is just the nature of the beast- to make a house that will last longer, use pressure treated wood and marine grade plywood- (these are treated to make them water resistent)- then, either apply thompson’s waterseal, or paint with a water-proofing paint.

Dog House Plans This past week has been a flurry of house and home activity. I pulled a 50 hour shift watching one of the systems to find out some patterns. In between system checks and tests, I would work on various projects for Carnage, the dogs, and the house (Laundry). There has been one project that has been floating around in my head for a month…. “HANG THE CORKBOARD IN THE MUD ROOM” There has been no easy solution except a major reorganization of the room. I know it sounds crazy, having an issue hanging a cork board, but the concern and discussions were real.
Today, I got up and started attacking the weekend projects. -A- has been under the full moon tide and also working quite a bit this week. I knew I would have the time and will to redo the room. So, while I thought up my plan of transformation, I worked on the “To-Do” list.

This past week, I finally figured out how to hang the cork board. I would move the 3 dog crates to the back wall and build a wooden frame around them. This would provide secure shelf space above the crates and increase the usable floor space in the mud room. The extra space comes in very handy when dealing with tons of snow gear for you and the dogs.
The whole project took longer than I thought It would (5 hours instead of the estimated 3 hours), but in the end, I’m very happy with the reorganization of the mud room. To quote Hannibal from the A-Team….. “I love it when a plan comes together”
The crates can pull out from under the wooden frame.
Recycling, Rechargeable batteries, and dog gear goes up on top.
The shelf and hooks along the right wall hold all the dog gear, first aid, and a few random items.
I was able to remove 3 pieces of furniture and increase the functional use of the space. The only thing I needed was the willingness to change things around and use up the recycled construction lumber in the barn.
When you empty and clean the room and begin anew, new and better ideas have room to grow.

Parents and family members spend countless hours trying to ensure the safety of their newborn babies after bringing them home from the hospital, from covering electrical outlets to keeping small and sharp items out of their reach. Families with pets, however, must take additional steps to ensure the safety of their newborns in a living environment shared with animals. Illana R. Reisner, DVM, PhD, assistant professor of behavioral medicine at Penn Vet, describes ways to prevent harmful encounters with pets and keep newborn babies safe, drawing from her research at the Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia and a recently published paper.
?A significant amount of change occurs within the home before a baby is born,? says Dr. Reisner. ?The nursery is prepared. There?s new furniture and baby items all over the house. This is the time to prepare your pets for the new arrival.? During this prep period, nervous cats may react by hiding or even spraying. Make sure they have unfettered access to the litter boxes, food, water and their favorite resting places. For dogs, it may be helpful to have a CD of baby noises or exposing them to new baby smells, like lotions.
Families can take certain steps to gradually introduce their pets to the household changes that come with a new baby even before the baby arrives home. One of the biggest changes that accompany the arrival of a baby in a pet-owning family is the cutback of time and attention spent on the pet. Exercise and general schedules should be adjusted prior to the baby?s homecoming, says Dr. Reisner, who advocates engaging in more quality activities to make up for the time that was previously dedicated to one?s pet.
Once the baby has come home from the hospital, canine owners should not allow any dog, regardless of how historically docile, to be climbed upon, poked, prodded, pulled, or otherwise baby-handled, according to Dr. Reisner. A dog is never to be left unsupervised with the children and vice versa. If proper, vigilant supervision is unable to be maintained, the dog should be securely separated from the child.
In such a case where direct supervision is not possible, Dr. Reisner suggests the use of baby gates, keeping the baby on one side and the dog on the other. The baby gate acts as not only a safety necessity, but as a learning tool, teaching the dog that great things can happen when the child is around. Additionally, the baby gate allows the dog to hear and possibly see what?s going on, making it feel less isolated.
It is normal to be anxious and to worry about how your pet will get along with your new baby. Plan ahead, and remember that many of the cohabitating woes that plague pet owners, their newborn babies and the household pet may be prevented with simple yet effective changes.

Munchkin is a teeny tiny Yorkshire Terrier born on February 7th, 2006. At almost a year and half, Munchkin now weighs only 1 pound and 13 ounces. She measures 10 inches from head to tail and 5 inches from the ground to her shoulder. Completely healthy and full of energy, her owners, Teresa Meng and Mike Hsiao, believe that she could possibly be the World’s Smallest Yorkie, if not the World’s Smallest Dog. Munchkin’s owners were a little worried about their Yorkie being so small when she was puppy. They were aware of the dangers involved with extremely small dogs, such as hypoglycemia, a condition where a dog’s blood sugar drops below normal inducing a coma like state. However, since Munchkin was born, she never showed any signs of being unhealthy. In fact, her owners state that they have never seen a Yorkie with as much energy as Munchkin.

Although Munchkin measures 10 inches long, she only weighs 1 pound 13 ounces. The previous title for the smallest Yorkie in the world was held by Pinnochio, weighing in at only 1 pound and measuring 8 inches from head to tail. Unfortunately, Pinnochio died on June 1st 2004, at only two and half years of age.
As far as future plans for Munchkin, her owners just want her to be healthy and live a long life. Mike and Teresa also plan on entering her into more contests around the San Diego area. So far, Munchkin has racked up a couple contest wins including the “Cutest Dog” category at the 2007 Kiwanis Club Ugliest Dog Contest, and “Scariest Dog” category at the 2006 Daily Pet Costume Contest.
Muchkin’s owners also see possible plans of using her as a dog model for print ads and commercials.
“Munchkin is definitely one of a kind. If she’s not the World’s Smallest Dog, then she definitely is the World’s cutest dog. Just look at her photos wearing cute pieces of small dog clothes! We want to share Munchkin with the world to show everyone just how darling she is,” states Teresa.

1. Make sure the dog house is big enough to accomodate your dog’s size as he grows into an adult. A comfortable moving space is 1/3 his standing height: He should be able to look out the entrance both standing up and sitting down.
2. Raise the floor of the house a few inches above the ground to keep pests from entering easily. To prevent rain coming in, make the doorway end of the house (along with the roof) a little slanted.
3. Avoid painting the interior of the dog house. Instead, provide enough insulation and ventilation. It is best that the house entrance faces east.

Military working dogs ‘Rico’, ‘Tank’ and a kennel-full of others are on duty day and night with their Air Force handlers patrolling the airport aprons, runways and fence lines against intruders.
Like their Air Force handlers, military police dogs undergo stringent selection processes and extensive training. Typically, the Air Force recruits two-year-old German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois dog breeds for service. Handlers and their dogs develop a close working relationship throughout the dogs’ six-to-eight year career.
Exercise Talisman Sabre (11–29 July 2011) is a major bilateral exercise designed to train Australian and United States forces in planning and conducting combined operations in order to improve Australian–US combat readiness and interoperability.

Excitement is in the air for the pet writing community as they celebrate an entire day devoted to their craft. The Business of Pet Writing Conference, the first of its kind, provides a unique forum for pet writers and publishing professionals to meet. Held at the Radisson Martinique hotel in New York City, the inaugural event coincides with the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
Beginning at 8:30 am on Saturday, February 9th, pet writers will spend the day rubbing elbows with publishing insiders. Valuable information will be shared teaching pet writers how to effectively present their work to the publishing community and the public at large. Participating writers will also have the rare opportunity to meet with editors and agents on a one to one basis. To top the day off, they will enjoy a very special appearance by David Frei, the long standing co-host of the Westminster show.
The lineup at The Business of Pet Writing Conference is a virtual who’s who of publishing including editors from Barron’s Educational Series, Bowtie Press/Kennel Club Books, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Quirk Books, Storey Publishing, TFH Publications, AKC Gazette/Family Dog, Dog Fancy, Wiley, agents and more.
Dick Donahue, senior editor at Publishers Weekly, will kick off the day with a keynote speech: Pet Book Selling and Publishing. Paul Aiken, Executive Director of The Authors Guild will talk on the subject, Negotiations and Book Contracts.
As for the important issues of image facing pet writers and writing, Rick Frishman, founder of Planned Television Arts, will talk about: Handling Book Publicity.
Susan Canavan, senior editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will speak about: Tips for Having A Successful Relationship with an Editor while Maura Teitelbum, of Abrams Artists Agency will present: How to Find the Right Literary Agent for You and Your Book.

will our new puppy be able to use belle’s kennel? (or will the smell of other dogs [if there still is one] bother him/her?)

Yes, it’s okay to use it. But wash it down with 1 part bleach to 9 parts water to kill any infections that may be lurking from the old dog if it died from an illness.
The smells of other dogs will probably be comforting for the new puppy, or at least interesting. It won’t hurt anything.

Just wash it out and keep clean water and regular food and maybe a chew toy. Dogs are dogs and what they want most is your love and attention. They are also animals and will do anything when you fail to discipline them. Kind of like kids.
